![]() ![]() The story is really thin to the point of being uninteresting, while the older games had some of the more interesting stories into the Mario franchise.Ĭharacters have been made significantly more generic, with the charming designs from the older games replaced with bland, NSMB designs made paper like. ![]() The games have virtually zero replay value, since the bosses have one strategy, the levels have only one way to beat them, and enemy encounters are too easy/pointless to bother with.īowser has no personality, unlike the earlier games. Or 'puzzles' where once fence can be hit with a hammer to knock it down, but the other two will either electrocute you, drop you into another room or drop a basin on your head if you hit them, with no indication which is which. You are also often screwed over by mechanics seemingly designed to waste your time/make things annoying, like Kamek turning all your cards into one type til the battle ends, or replacing them all with slippers. This was apparently because of some Miyamoto mandate during Sticker Star's development, and means the areas feels lifeless and boring. There are virtually no unique characters, with almost everyone being generic Toads with a few friendly 'enemy' type NPCs thrown in. It's not clear what Things or stickers are needed for what situation, so the games are very trial and error based (especially Sticker Star). Or if you use them before you're meant to. The battle system itself isn't that enjoyable, since enemies are really weak, you do a ton of damage with your attacks and there's basically no need for strategy.Ĭertain items called Things are required to defeat bosses, and you're screwed if you don't have them on you at the time. As a result, getting into fights is almost always a waste of time, since you'll always be left with less resources than you had beforehand. Combat is completely useless, since the games don't have any sort of level up system/upgrade mechanics, and you use consumable items for all attacks. ![]()
